The Haunting

The past has a way to creep up on you.

Just as we all acknowledge that my stint in Paris, though short, has well ended. I've folded up all admin and bureaucratic paperwork before leaving (and if you've dealt with them before, you will understand what a nightmare it can be), and lo and behold, this came up.

Background is, I took a pre-paid upfront housing insurance for a year for my studio, though I left 6 months after, I written in on registered mail to announce my leaving and to cancel my contract with them. The date of expiry was supposed to be 1 Oct 2010. For some time, the insurance company has been sending me mail to my Parisian address asking for a renewal. And mail were returned, they took to sending me emails.

I calmly replied that I've moved out, and I do not need your services anymore, thank you. But no!! They say in this case, I have to ask my landlord for a written declaration that the studio is in order, or that I have cancelled my subscription to the electricity authority of France. (Oh, by the way, this EDF - Electricité de France - comes up A LOT if you ever going to live in France.)

This is impossible! My insurance has expired, they suggest to renew, I didn't want (nor need!) to renew, they kept writing in. This is not your regular unsolicited mail! They want you to do something, to show them something, in order for the insurance not to be renewed!! Suddenly it becomes my burden!

This is Kafkaesque!
