RIP Forever Pepe

Pepe had to be put to sleep today cause of an infection on her limbs. She's been a little blind and shaky in her movements for the past year, given that she's a very old cat, it was a miracle she survived this long.

Pepe came to me rather than the other way round, back then there were 3-4 cats in the back, but somehow she took a liking to me, and would jump to the kitchen ledge to watch what I was doing. When I let her into the kitchen, she would sit on the barstool to preen herself, and sometimes when one wasn't looking, attack a loaf of (white) bread. She knows when she's been called and answers back with a loud meow. Sometimes, I feed her some lukewarm fullcream milk, only milk, not cream, and not cold either. She would climb to the upper floor and find her way to my bedroom, and take a nap at the corner of my bed. There've been instances when I let her sleep through the night, but she often came right up to my face and I didn't allow it after that. When you try to pet her, she will put her weight so much against your hand that she'll fall over. Purring at the same time.

In Oct 2008 before I left for BKK, I had the feeling that she wouldn't make it past the new year. She did, amazingly, and in fact survived to Oct 2009. In the end, it still meant that I wasn't around when she passed on. Last I saw her was in Aug 09.

I was in the middle of a haircut when R broke the news to me, left sad, but realised there wasn't much else we can do for her. It wasn't until I got home at 9, and decided to write something about her that I started to cry. Cry, because, you couldn't be there at her last hour, cry when you realised how much she suffered, cry because there'll never be another Pepe replacement. That pint-sized, black furred animal that just likes to be loved.

Rest in peace...

she went a way peacefully and quickly. In the morning, I gave her her favourite food of canned fish and she ate it all. Sorta like a last meal. Initially, I wanted the vet to check and just give it an injection to cure the infection. But he said she was in bad shape and the swelling could be due to many causes; liver, kidney and heart failure. And since she's already so old, no point subjecting her to various tests. She may be eating now, but it's only a matter of time before she stops eating and waits to die. In the end, it was more humane to let her go. She has led a long life of 15 years. Imagine, we were only in army then. Am sure she knew you were always good to her.
